Using Microsoft Word Art with SBC

Do you want to learn how to make this effect in Storybook Creator 4.0? You have to use Microsoft Word to help get this effect. Here are your instructions:

1. Go to the Insert tab in Word and click on WordArt

2. Select your WordArt style

3. Type your text

4. Click the down arrow by Text effects and select 3-D (off axis 1 top)

5. Click the down arrow by Text effects and go to the bottom of the menu and select 3-D rotation options

6. On the next menu select 3-D Format – play with the different options to get the effect you want.

7. When you get the effect you want, right click and copy

8. Go to SBC and right click and paste.

9. Use the magic wand and erase the white background. (it is easier if your background on the page is a dark color)

10. You may have to use other cutting tools to touch up the cut. You can also double click on the image and use the eraser to touch up the image.

11. Now you can select your image and cut around the person using the cutting tools.

12. Cut the persons legs horizontally and put the top part on top of the number and the legs under the number (in the elements panel)

13. This project takes some playing and experimenting to get it right, don’t get discouraged.

Consultant websites and ordering

Listed here are the changes to your consultants website when ordering. The changes are good and I personally like how it adds your total as you go. The other thing I like is that if you leave your computer for a while and come back you do not loose all you have selected. You will have to sign back in but your selections are still there.

1. Click on Shop on line then Digital scrapbooking and then new products.

2. Click on Select under each package to buy. There is a small version of the package under more views.

3. Click on Add to Bag to order. Watch the top right corner for your cumulative total. Even if you leave for a while it will save your order. You will have to log back in but the selections will still be there. After you add the item to your shopping cart and you want to order more products, click on "Keep Shopping" If you are ready to check out, click on "My Bag (with the list of items and total $)

4. Then click the green Continue to Checkout and fill out your name and address information. Fill out the Payment method. Go to Rewards and Discounts and enter any information there. Then click Order now on the right side.

5. Shows your order with the links to see your downloads and print your order.

6 & 7. click Download to start your download and install your package.

Overlays – make your own

Take your special picture and turn it into an overlay. Here is how you do it.

Under the Format Tab, select the Filter option. Within these filters, you will find the Threshold Filter. I set the threshold to 128. The colors I chose were black for the low color and white for the high color.

I then lowered the opacity to 40% in the Format tab.

The paper I used under the overlay photo was from the Classic Nativity Digital Additions paper 2. For the frame I used the same paper as the background and cut the center out. Added a 3-D filter, then added my photos and text. One simple quick and fun page to make.

Here is a technique to try out with your Storybook Creator plus. This YouTube will teach you how to make this page. Remember that if it does not look like you want to, try a different picture or font. I had a sunset picture that I thought would look super great. Only it did not look good at all.

Memory Manager Tip

Have you ever wanted to copy a picture into your Memory Manager from Facebook or google? We there are two way to do this.

1. Right click and select Save As and add it to a folder on your computer. I save mine to a folder called Exchange folder.

2. Right click on the picture and select copy. Then go to your memory vault and on some white space, right click and select paste. And it will add the picture to your vault.

At a crop the other day with a bunch of Creative Memories consultants. We were all to make a two page spread, using the Fabulous Digital power palette. Then we shared the pages with each other. While they did their pages the traditional way, I took the ideas and turned them into a digital version. Some pages were more challenging than others to make, but it was a fun project.

Text wrap #2

Well a teacher is always learning. Thank you Leslie for teaching me this really easy way to text wrap.

Instructions:

Right click on your photo and select from the menu Properties.
This box will come up and you select Text Wrap
Then click the down arrow on “Space around element” and adjust the size of space you want around the element.

This is my new preferred way to text wrap, because it is so quick and easy.

Text wrapping

Instructions:

First make sure that in your elements panel your text box is BELOW the picture.

Right click on photo and choose Text wrapping and then bounding box. This puts the text very close to the photo and sometimes hard to read. You can adjust the margins some by using the paragraph settings on Format Text ribbon.

My preferred way is to keep the text away from the photo and make it look a little neater. You do this by adding a second photo box. Fill it with color and put it behind the picture, adjust it so it is a little larger than the photo. We will get rid of the color shortly.

To align the two photo boxes, select them both and go to the Arrange ribbon and select the two alignments that are circled in red.

To work with the back photo box:

Select the back photo of the two in the element panel
On the Cut & Fill ribbon select color fill. and change the color to any color, Then click OK
Go to the Format Ribbon and select Opacity, Slide the opacity all the way to zero and click Accept.
Right click on the back photo box and select Text wrapping and then Bounding Box.
Make the back photo box slightly larger than the front photo box, this will push the text away from the photo.

Circle photo mats

From the insert ribbon add a photo box (empty frame)
From the Format Photos ribbon we will be using the Select and choose a double mat frame (the first choice)
From the Format Photos ribbon click on Format. Or, if you click the down arrow there are two choices, select "edit current frame effects"
Select the first flat shadow mat. In the cutout, select an ellipse. Then change mat fill. Select a color it does not matter the color because you need to slide the opacity to zero (all the way to the left) Click OK If your circle looks a little off it will be fixed in the next step
Select the second flat shadow mat. Change the cutout to the ellipse. Then click on Change mat fill. At this point you can choose either color or paper whatever suites your page design. For this sample I selected a width of the mat at 3.After you mat the photo you can make it circle or oval just by holding your shift key and dragging the edges to the desired shape.

Photo panels

I love it when my customers teach me new techniques, that I did not know we could do. There is always something new to learn when you are working with SBC & sbcStudio, and computers. My philosophy for life is “If you have not learned something new each day, you have not lived your day to the fullest.”

Well here is what I learned. Did you know that CM has added photo panels to our options when we make a new project? Well I did not realize they were there and always created my page and then went to the CM Photo Center to upload my page to create the panel. DUHH!! I can make the panels right in StoryBook Creator.

You can also make the 4XD Book Cards within SBC.

So to make your panels within SBC create a new project the panel size you would like to create. The when you are done creating, on the home ribbon click Order. This will take you to the CM photo center and you can place your order. Now how SIMPLE was that!!!

These pictures were taken when I went to visit the grandkids and kids this April. I had such an enjoyable time and the kids loved me too. Oh the life of a Gamoo it is GREAT!!! We went to Meyer Gardens, Mc Donalds, played pillow fights, cooked and did scrapbooking projects.

Embossing with StoryBook Creator

Wow what fun you can have creating embossed pages. All you have to do is use the corners and slide the slider all the way to the right. The video below will teach you how to do this fun technique.

If you want written instructions.

Select your paper and go to the Cut & Fill ribbon
select More in the cutters and click on Corner Cutter
Click on the down arrow on the Select a corner and choose your edge
Slide the size of corner to 100
Add a 3-D filter and shadow and you are done.

There are a lot of variations you can do with this technique so have fun. The kits used for these are Winter Delight Digital Corners and Celebration Digital Corners.

Scanning photos

Do you have a lot of photos sitting around, that need to be scanned? Well, do I have an answer for you. I was told about this scanner from a friend, and she said it was fast and had good quality. So I went and checked for myself. This Pandigital PANSCN06 personal scanner scans at 300 & 600 dpi (dots per inch). Now every time I scan a photo it is usually at 300 dpi’s unless I want to enlarge a small photo to make it bigger then I use 600 dpi’s.

With this scanner I was able to scan 500 photos in 1 1/2 hours. Now can you beat that with a flatbed scanner? I don’t think so!

A photo a day

A lot of my friends locally are doing a photo a day, and some are doing a page a day. The P2P team has also challenged us to do the same and post our pages on the Facebook group under the Day2Day tab.

So I took on the challenge, and have really enjoyed taking pictures every day. When I get to the end of the day and remember sometimes “Oh No, I have not taken a picture today” it is time to freak out and grab the camera! I do not want to miss a day. They always say it takes 21 days to make a habit.

So I have created a bunch of pages that I will be using 7 photos on for a complete week. Then some are doing these full month calendars and I thought why not try it. So here is my version. Use the opposite page to do your journaling.

The paper used is the Winter Solstice, the embellishments are Winter Digital appreciation kit. For the title use your favorite font and make it big. On my font I used the 3-D feature and added a heavy shadow.

I made a book for my grandson after he came for a visit. He loves that book and it is always his goodnight story book. When I went for a visit in October, he told me “Gamoo made for me” he is 2 1/2 years old and loves his story book by Gamoo. That is just one example why we must record and print those precious memories.

This webinar will teach you how to create shapes with your photos and also create fancy edges on your photos. The webinar is about 10 minutes long. The following instruction pages are provided for you to save and follow. Please let me know if you need further help or have questions.

Start with your selected photo
On the Format Photos ribbon in the Frames group choose Select.
Select Double Mat
On the Format Photos ribbon select Format. The window will look like this one.
Click first on Flat Shadow mat. Change the color and change the shape to Ellipse and change the opacity to 0
Click on the second Flat Shadow Mat and change the shape to Ellipse and change the color to match your page. (do not adjust the opacity on this one)

To use the shape again simply right click on the photo/frame and choose remove photo from frame.

On the Format Photos ribbon in the Frames section choose Select.
If you have purchased the fancy edges packages you can select the down arrow where it says Frames.
Select the package you want and then the desired edge.

The papers used in these examples are the photo mats from the Hummingbird collection.

With this page I selected a dark brown color and added the grass texture to the whole page. Then I added the Cheerful Digital Overlay1, the text box it Andy 14.

To get the soft edges, put your photos into the photo boxes, make sure they are the way you want them to be and then flatten each one. On the Format ribbon, select Filters and choose Soften edge. I used 57 for the number on the soft edge. You can use the slider to adjust and make more softness if you like.

ABC template

We all have little kids around us that we take photos of and often times we might look for the ABC blocks to add to our pages.

Add variety to your blocks, fill them with photos, surfaces and filters. Just play and have fun with the blocks and add some fun to your children’s pages.

To create your own set of blocks, make a square and fill it with paper. Then add a second color on top of that and cut out the letter using one of the Alpha shapes.

Here are two page and if you need more room for journaling, add a picture to one of the photo boxes then fill it with color. Then you can add a text box on top of the colored box. Remember to click on the grey template photo to download your copies.

What is a Wallpaper: In SBC you have an option when creating a new project to make a Wallpaper. This is simply put, a desktop image or page you create to be your desktop. Here is a sample of one created.

How to take a black & white photos and color parts of the photo: This was covered in an earlier webinar but reviewed here. The larger size of this handout is on earlier post to this blog. This is what the page looks like.

How do I remember everything I have learned?
- 1) Make sure you practice what you learn
- 2) Teach someone else what you have learned
- 3) Keep a notebook of printed ideas you want to remember

Do I keep a separate folder with all my downloaded packages or once they are installed, do I need to worry about it?
- Yes, I save all my downloads to a folder called "Downloads" After they are downloaded they get installed into SBC.
Backup, Backup, Backup is the real key here.
- You do not want to have to redownload these files, as it takes time.

How to delete SB projects (books):
- FIRST Go to the folder where your storybooks are located Find the book you want to delete and high light it
- Right click and choose delete or just push the delete button
- This is the path to my storybooks

Resizing projects (books) You have to know where your storybooks are located. Remember you can only downsize. The sizes that can be downsizes are 11 x 8.5 which go to 7 x 5 and 12 x 12 which will go to 8 x 8. Follow the numbered steps below.
Make sure to check the new smaller size for text boxes or things going off the edges.

How do I share a storybook?
- In SBC you have to go to the home ribbon and click on “Order" Next screen click “order book”
- Go through the preview process checking for any errors, things too close to the edges or center of the book. When it gets to the end of your book in the preview there are 2 boxes to check, check them and click on “Continue”
- You will now have to sign into the CM Photo Center and your book will upload.
- After the upload follow the numbered instructions below.

Browse feature of Storybook

This feature has been here all along but might have been overlooked. When looking for a package to use, do you find your self looking one by one. Well instead of looking this slow way use the “Browse packages” feature. Find the package you want to use and then select click on Select.

Sunset

The other day my husband took me for a ride so we could take pictures of the sunsets over Salt Lake City. The view was beautiful that night and so were the colors. Enjoy your new template!

The center shape has the opacity turned down to about 50%, used one of the photos as the background and sampled the sunset for the text. The embellishment is one of the freebies from the P2P website, with the glitter added, 3-D filter and heavy shadow.

I have a friend Bonnie, that said she copies the pages into Memory Manager and then writes the instructions so she can remember how to make the pages at a later date. What a GREAT idea Bonnie! So everyone get on over there and create all the pages, save them in Memory Manager and write the instructions too. As for me, I burn the trees and print, print, print everything. So now I have a binder 2” thick. Bonnie, is saving the trees.

It sure is fun the different ideas we can learn from each other. You ladies are all so much fun, and I love hearing from all of you.

Font Shapes

Have you purchased a few new fonts (some are shapes & not fonts) and can not find them? That is because, you use them differently than the rest. There are two at the present time that are Alpha Shapes and not the regular fonts. They are Playful Digital Alpha Shapes and Formal Digital Alpha Shapes. To use these alpha shapes use the following instructions:

on the content ribbon click Shapes
Select Alpha shapes, and then the one you want to use (I created a folder in content manager for my Alpha Shapes), if you do not have them listed in a folder you will have to find them.
You will then letter by letter select the ones you need, using one of the following choices: 1) create this shape, 2) cut this shape out of a piece of paper, 3) apply this shape to text.

You will now be able to resize, move and apply filters to your font shapes.

Have fun with these, as the possibilities are endless!!

The other day, I thought it would be fun to turn the macro feature on, on my camera and shoot a bunch of flowers. These are all in my yard this time of year. Pansies are a favorite because of their beauty and different colors. Lilacs are a favorite because of their fragrance and forget-me-knots remind me of you youth. When I was a teenager I asked my Dad if I could plant some flowers, and he agreed. However, over the years, he had a hard time getting rid of the forget-me-knots. He use to say “how can I forget you Cathie, I can not get rid of those flowers, they are like weeds.”

Template tidbit

What is a template or blueprint you may ask? Well simply put, it is a predesigned page with shades of greys or blue. You select the element, and choose "fill the item with" and choose your background and embellishments. Then you drag your photos on and your pages are done quickly.

When you download a free template, save it to a file on your desktop. I like to save them in my "exchange folder." After you have downloaded the template open StoryBook if it is not already open.

click on the home ribbon
click on import page
go to the folder, where you downloaded the template to
click on the template and then in the bottom right corner click on get pages

This will bring the pages in at the bottom of your project. You will then need to left click on the page and drag it into the order you want the page to be. If you have never made a folder on your desktop, right click on top of the desktop. Choose "New" then "Folder" At this point name your new folder, as it should be highlighted in blue, unless you hit the enter key. In which case you would right click again on the folder and choose rename, then you can name the folder "Exchange Folder"

Remember that your exchange folder is for things going into or out of the folder. Example: you download a template and bring it into Storybook, or you save your page and want to upload it to your favorite photo center for printing.

Little tidbits

Would you like to get rid of the white edges some of our papers have? Well there are three ways to accomplish this task.

1st - in the Elements panel unlock the background. Then click on Order, next click on Make normal (not the background) Then you will be able to stretch the paper to eliminate the white edge.
2nd - after your paper is on the page, right click and then choose flatten. You will then be able to stretch the paper and eliminate the white edges.
3rd - choose your paper and drag it to your page instead of choosing make the background and then stretch it to eliminate the white edges.

Another thing I have been doing, so that the paper can be used as "fill this element" option, is to cut the paper with the rectangle cuter. Next, right click on the paper and choose "Save as Content" Save it in Your stuff as paper and you can name the paper at this point. Now you will be able to use the papers without the white edges.

Importance of sharing

About six months ago I had to opportunity to listen to Rhonda Anderson. Wow, what a fantastic night it was, to listen to her and her story, of how Creative Memories got started. If she were ever to come to Salt Lake City again, I would drop what I was doing and go and listen to her again. She is one fantastic woman, and listening to her just inspires you to want to be and do better in recording those precious memories. Here is a copy of a post by her from http://blogs.creativememories.com/why/2010/05/how-important-is-sharing.html I felt it was important enough to share here on my blog.

Recently I received a letter from a Creative Memories Consultant. And, as I read, I was filled with gratitude for the thousands of you who have felt called to share the Creative Memories Mission so effectively. Because of you, countless people’s lives have been touched by their pictures and stories.

More than that, Creative Memories Consultants inspire each other. Here is an excerpt from that letter: “As a CM Consultant, I have grown in many areas because of the people I have worked with. And I covet the relationships that were created. They have helped me to be more outgoing and a stronger person than what I was. But most of all, it's the special people that I would have never met if Creative Memories hadn’t brought us all together! And my albums are a forever treasure.”

Wow, what a lovely message that reminds us of the powerful relationship building that happens when you share Creative Memories. And there is such strong documentation that supports the power of relationship building through pictures and stories.

Here's some interesting information I learned from child psychologist, Dr. Ken Condrell. Dr. Condrell specializes in helping children recover from depression and trauma. He says, “ALL children, no matter if they have stress in their life or not, need to have strong self-esteem. And viewing family photo albums with children emphasizes what is right about a child’s life and shows children that the bad stuff is temporary. Pictures and stories offer proof of how they are loved. Everyone, no matter their age, needs photo albums to build their self-esteem and give them hope.”

I wish everyone in the world could have at least one album about their life. In fact, in our Ten Questions Idea book there is a chapter called “Life is Great.” The chapter includes questions about your great family, friends, faith and more. An album like this is easy to create, yet holds so much power to show love and encouragement to people of all ages.
Like Dr. Condrell confirms, pictures and stories unite us, strengthen relationships and help us to be more grateful. Completed albums are one of life’s most powerful tools and we need to help MORE people to experience that blessing. I am so grateful to be serving alongside amazing people like you –- Creative Memories Consultants and customers –- as we help the world see their GREAT LIVES captured in albums.

Creating new packages, folders and shapes

Here are some instructions on how to create new folders and packages in the Content Manager of StoryBook Creator. Also there are instructions on how to create your own new shapes, using any image. Click on the page to make it go larger and open a new window.

You have to be in Content Manager to create new folder or package

1. click the + sign

2. click on Create user content package

3. enter the new Package name

4. choose the drop down arrow and choose the folder you want to place the new package in, such as My Stuff.

Text from creating shape page

Start with your shape picture. If you do not have one use google and search for a photo that has a shape you want to create. For this example, I went to google and searched for pictures of flowers. When you find the picture you want right click on the photo and choose Copy.

1. back in Storybook right click and choose paste and your picture is now on your page

2. click on your picture to make it active

3. click on the insert ribbon

4. click the down arrow under Shape

5. click on Custom shape using curved lines

6. click around the desired shape you want to create, in the bottom left corner is Edit Points, if you need to change any points

7. when you are satisfied with your shape outline, click Save this shape as content, select the correct folder to save your shape in

8. on the Custom Shape window now click close

To use your shape

9. You must first create a text box and write your text, then with the text box selected go to the format text ribbon

10. choose Text shape and click the down arrow

11. go to the folder where you saved the new shape and select it

She was so pleased with her book. She shares the book with all her violin students and their parents. The middle pages is not of Africa, it is my family.

Colorize photos

Steps to create and colorize photo

flatten your photo
use the custom cutter and go around the area you want to color. Make sure you have the shaded area on the part you want to color
use the "copy the shaded area"select the copied portions and click on the format ribbon and select Threshold. Select your colors (2) and then adjust the slider for the desired coverage.
You can also use the rubber stamp to create a softer color and look.

Memory Manager recycle bin

Learn how to clean out all your deleted photos from your Memory Manager recycle bin. Some people might thing that when you delete photos in Memory Manager that the deleted photos go to your computer recycle bin. This is not the case, Memory Manager has it’s own recycle bin and you should keep it cleaned out to free up computer memory.

To create this page I added the background paper, then created a photo mat that was 12 x 12 and used the Maple leaf edges, that are on the format photos ribbon. Then I filled it with the same background apply a 3-D filter to the that layer. Paper is from the Classic Spring additions as are the flowers, bird, and butterfly.

Copying a page to a different project

Have you created a page in one project and want it to be part of your calendar? Or wanted to copy a calendar page and make it apart of one of your StoryBooks? Well here is the answer for you. This is an easy process and you can have 3 projects open at one time. Just make sure that both projects are open and ready to copy and paste the pages either way.

Copy & Paste Text

Here is a tip that will allow you to copy text from a word processor, the internet or any other program. When you are doing your journaling you do not need to retype text that is already typed in a word processor.

You can copy text from a word processing program, from the internet or any program you have typed text in. To accomplish this:

go to your word processing program
open the document
left click, hold and drag to highlight the desired text
right click on top of the highlighted text and choose copy
go to your StoryBook project where you want to paste the text
click on the insert ribbon
click the down arrow on text
choose "place clipboard text on page"adjust your text box to fit your text

Following these instructions will save you a few steps when copying text and pasting into a Storybook Project.

Importing pages from other projects

To copy a project page to a calendar project.

open both projects (you can have 3 projects open at one time)
make sure that all elements are unlocked
on the project you want to copy the page from, left click, hold and drag from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner. This will copy every element. Do not copy the calendar area.
your screen would look like this one.
next you can right click and choose copy, or hold the CTRL key while pressing the C key. This will copy every element.
go to your second project where you want to paste the page to.
right click on the new page and choose paste or hold the CTRL key while pressing the V key. This will paste what you have copied from your project page, to the calendar page in your new project.

This feature lets you copy from a project (book) where you have created your pages for books or page prints and then will let you copy them to a calendar project. Using this feature you are able to print page prints for $1.75, when you order a calendar. Even if you do not use the calendar part of the calendar, your page prints are beautiful quality and at a cheaper price.

Note: This process can be reversed, if you have created a beautiful calendar page and you want to use that page in your book.

Welcome Page of StoryBook

Just as a little reminder on the Welcome page of Storybook are some very helpful items. At the top row there are the following choices:

Create a new project
Open an existing project
Check for pricing and content (this takes you to the CM site for purchasing. Please make sure you use your Consultants website for purchases!)
Manage my content (this is where you organize, import new packages, enter the activation codes and create keywords)
Tutorials (here you will find two webinars and more tutorials online link) The first choice is Virtual Tour, Second is Getting Started and then at the bottom left is the link for View more tutorials online.) Everyone of these are very helpful and will teach you more about the programs.
User settings. (use this option to make your personal settings for the program) You can also change the directory of where your content and packages are located if you have them stored on a different drive than the “C drive”
Then there is the Blue ? – this is where you can search the help contents, User Guide, Tutorials, User Settings and About (the program information and serial number)

At the bottom make sure you check for updates to the program. This is in the bottom left corner and if your software is up to date it will tell you.

Copying/Backing up your CM packages and books

I have been asked many times how to back up files, and decided to come up with an instruction page. Please remember there are many ways to back up your files and this is the way I choose to do it. I have checked out back up programs and have not yet found one I like. A lot of the backup programs condense your files and you can not just open them. You would have to restore the backup which is not an option for me.

This method is how I back up ALL my data files, not just CM files. Please click on the page to better read the instructions.

If you are interested in learning more about StoryBook Creator 3.0 and Memory Manager 3.0. There are lots of webinars posted here on the blog. They are on the side bar under “Creative Memories Webinars” and “Webinars page 2”

When you watch these webinars, you need Windows Media Player to view them. I like to watch a little and then pause the play and practice what was just watched.

Bubble making

To make the bubbles:

Select the Silver Glass brad from the Digital Embellishments office supply kit. You can also use the same brad from the gold kit.
Use the ellipse cutter and cut the center out
Select your photo, use the ellipse cutter and cut out the part you want. You will need to flatten your photo for it to be cut.
Use the Arrange feature to make the bubble and photo the same size. I turned the opacity down to 75 to lighten up the white strip on the bubble.

Color Wash and Adjust Hue

Have you ever liked the layout of a page but not wanted the color? Here is a sample of the original page and the page changed using the Color wash and Adjust hue features found on the Color ribbon.

To change the background paper color make sure you unlock the element on the left side by un-clicking the little yellow lock. You will have to select each element individually and change the colors according to your preference.

Add a little Bling to your pages

This it the CM – Go Digital challenge #10 from the Facebook group. This was so much fun and easy to do. Here are your instructions on how to add bling your embellishments.

Add the item to be "glitterized" to your project. While clicked on the item, click on the "Format" tab. Next, click on "Surfaces". Choose the very first surface option, "Block". Slide the "Amplification" selector all the way to the right, to number 10. Click "Accept".

Repeat the above process again. In most cases, this will yield you a bling-ish enough glitter finish. If you would like more, do it again.
